Biography

Agnese Purgatorio was born in Bari in 1964, the Italian threshold city between East and West. Migration and nomadism are the privileged themes of Agnese Purgatorio’s storytelling. privileged themes of her narrative; from the very beginning the artist, with her multidisciplinary practice, she resorts to various expressive languages; from performance to installation from video to neon light writing, from sound to digital and analogue collage.
Her works and performances have been exhibited and commissioned by prestigious national and international institutions such as the Pinacoteca Metropolitana Corrado Giaquinto in Bari, The Pino Pascali Foundation in Polignano a Mare, The MAC in Pescara (Matta Arte Contemporanea) the Milan Triennale, the National Gallery of Rome, the Jordan National Gallery, the Museum of Contemporary Sculpture in Matera, the Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art, the Venice Biennale, the Bienal Internacional de Arte Contemporânea de Curitiba, the Museum of Contemporary Art Zagreb, the Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa, el Museo de Arte Contemporáneo – La Plata, the Armenian Center for Contemporary Experimental Art – Yerevan, das Ludwig Museum für Moderne Kunst – Aachen, le Musée de L’Elysée – Lausanne, in a series of solo exhibitions in the Italian Cultural Culture in Melbourne, Moscow, Zagreb, Tirana, Strasbourg, Cologne, Copenhagen and in important private galleries such as: Galleria Bonomo – Bari, Gallery Onetwentyeight – New York, Mars Gallery – Melbourne, Podbielski Contemporay – Berlin and Milan. In 2017 he won the prestigious Premio Anima XVI edition, received in Rome at the Campidoglio.
