Eve Arnold inizia a fotografare nel 1946 e nel 1948 studia con Alexei Brodovitch alla New School di New York. Collabora con Magnum Photos dal 1951 e ne diventa membro effettivo nel 1957.

Dal 1962 vive in Inghilterra e lavora tra Stati Uniti, Unione Sovietica e Cina. Nel 1980 il suo libro In China riceve il National Book Award, l'anno della sua prima grande mostra personale al Brooklyn Museum.
